Catechism 17

What is idolatry?

Idolatry is trusting in created things rather than the Creator for our hope and happiness, significance and security.

Unclear the moment
when the tree ceases to be
an ornament, a source of food,
            a sign of flourishing,
                        growth

and becomes
            a means of carving power,
a pillar-altar to knowledge,
            a ladder for striving
                        hearts.

Unclear when hands
            turn from prayer to praise
of that which they themselves have made,
            which their own thumbs
                        support.

Unclear when folly
            becomes the moment’s latest truth,
when stars cannot illumine dullness
            in our darkened
                        minds.
